Dr. Ochoa received a Bachelor's degree in Physics from San Diego State University, and a Master of Science and Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. She is also a classical flutist.
A veteran of three space flights, Dr. Ochoa has logged over 700 hours in space. She was a mission specialist on STS-56 in 1993, the Payload Commander on STS-66 in 1994, and a mission specialist and flight engineer on STS-96 in 1999.
On STS-96, the first docking was performed on the International Space Station and four ton of logistics and supplies were delivered. Dr. Ochoa coordinated the transfer of supplies.
