"We
see more empty rafts than rafts with people on them, so we know that a lot
of them have not made it, and that's really sad"
- Mayte Greco
Mayte Greco, a mother of five and owner of an air taxi company in Florida, is also a pilot for an organization that conducts search and rescue operations over the ocean between Florida and Cuba.
The pilots search for Cuban exiles in rafts - rafts that are sometimes no more than an inner tube. Each time they see a raft, it's a very emotional moment.
Once the tiny rafts are spotted, they radio the US Coast Guard, drop food and water to the passengers and continue to circle the raft until the Coast Guard comes to the rescue.
